1TEC Partner Spotlight: Schaeffler – The Name Behind LuK, INA & FAG

As part of our 1TEC Partner Spotlight series, we're looking at the companies behind the 1TEC Auto Hub network, the technology they develop and why having access to that expertise matters to us at Meadowfield Auto Centre.

This time, we're looking at Schaeffler.

The Schaeffler name itself might not be familiar to every motorist. But there's a very good chance you've encountered one of its major automotive brands:

LuK. INA. FAG.

Between them, these brands cover some of the most technically demanding repairs we carry out – from clutches and dual-mass flywheels to DSG double-clutch systems, timing systems, wheel bearings and suspension components.

And there's an important reason Schaeffler stands out to us:

Schaeffler isn't simply producing replacement parts for cars. It's an OE supplier helping vehicle manufacturers develop the technology fitted to them in the first place.

1TEC itself describes Schaeffler as a trusted technical partner and OE supplier to leading vehicle producers, with its OE expertise carried into complete aftermarket repair solutions.

OE knowledge brought into the independent workshop

We've spoken previously about why the OE connection matters when choosing the products we fit.

Schaeffler is an excellent example.

Its engineering extends across transmission, engine and chassis systems. The company's aftermarket operation then takes that engineering knowledge and turns it into repair solutions independent garages can actually use.

For Meadowfield, that's important.

We're not looking for a component simply because it fits the vehicle.

We want to know who's behind it, how it has been engineered and whether we're comfortable putting our name against the repair.

Schaeffler describes its aftermarket approach as a systems approach: rather than treating individual components in isolation, the parts within its repair solutions are designed to work together.

That's exactly the kind of thinking we want from a 1TEC technical partner.

LuK – much more than a clutch brand

LuK is probably the Schaeffler brand our customers are most likely to encounter at Meadowfield.

It's a name very closely associated with clutch replacement – but its transmission expertise goes considerably further.

LuK produces clutch and release systems, dual-mass flywheels and complete transmission repair solutions.

When we're replacing a conventional clutch, we don't just consider whether the friction plate itself is worn.

The complete system matters.

That can include the clutch cover, release system, hydraulic components and, where fitted, the dual-mass flywheel (DMF).

Once again, it's about looking at the system rather than one isolated component.

And modern transmissions take that principle considerably further.

DSG and double-clutch technology

This is an area where the depth of Schaeffler's expertise becomes particularly interesting.

Many motorists know DSG as Volkswagen Group's name for its direct-shift gearbox, but the underlying concept is a double-clutch transmission.

Instead of the single clutch found in a conventional manual transmission, a double-clutch gearbox effectively uses two clutch paths, allowing the transmission to prepare another gear while one is already engaged.

It's clever technology.

It's also considerably more complicated than replacing a conventional clutch.

Through LuK, Schaeffler produces dedicated RepSet 2CT repair solutions for double-clutch transmissions.

For example, Schaeffler's current catalogue lists LuK RepSet 2CT applications against OE references for Audi, SEAT, Škoda and Volkswagen, including seven-speed dry double-clutch transmissions.

That's particularly relevant to an independent workshop like ours.

These aren't obscure systems anymore. DSG and other double-clutch transmissions are fitted to huge numbers of vehicles now reaching independent garages for servicing and repair.

Wet and dry double clutches

Not every double-clutch transmission works in exactly the same way.

There are both dry-clutch and wet-clutch systems, and the repair approach and components required can differ significantly.

Schaeffler's LuK range covers both.

In fact, its newer LuK RepSet 2CT DMF solutions combine the double clutch and dual-mass flywheel into a matched repair package, with Schaeffler offering solutions for both wet and dry double-clutch applications.

There's a good engineering reason for doing this.

The DMF used with a double-clutch transmission is different from the conventional arrangement many people associate with a manual gearbox. Schaeffler explains that wear can occur between the DMF and double-clutch interfaces, meaning replacing one worn component while retaining another can adversely affect the behaviour of the complete system.

So again:

It's not simply about replacing the part that's failed. It's about understanding the system it's working within.

DSG repairs require the right procedure too

The quality of the component is only half of the equation.

It also has to be installed correctly.

Double-clutch replacement can require specific measuring procedures, specialist tooling and subsequent adjustment using suitable diagnostic equipment.

Schaeffler's own technical information for double-clutch repairs specifies procedures such as clutch adjustment and, on relevant applications, basic adjustment using diagnostic equipment.

That's another reason we're interested in having companies such as Schaeffler behind the 1TEC network.

Modern independent vehicle repair increasingly depends on three things working together:

the right component, the right technical information and the right technician.

Take one of those away and simply buying a premium part doesn't guarantee a premium repair.

MPM and Schaeffler – two sides of gearbox servicing and repair

This also demonstrates something we particularly like about the collection of technical partners behind 1TEC.

They're not operating in isolation.

When we're dealing with a modern DSG or other automatic transmission, MPM's expertise helps on the lubricant and fluid side – identifying the correct manufacturer-prescribed fluid for the transmission.

Schaeffler and LuK take us much further into the mechanical side of double-clutch technology.

That's an important distinction.

Changing transmission fluid and repairing a double-clutch system are completely different operations, but they're both examples of how much more specialised modern gearbox work has become.

It's also why we've continued investing in our own automatic gearbox servicing capabilities at Meadowfield.

INA – timing systems and engine technology

Then we move from the gearbox to the engine.

INA is Schaeffler's engine-focused product brand and another name our technicians know extremely well.

Through INA, Schaeffler supplies repair solutions covering areas including timing systems, auxiliary belt drives, cooling and valvetrain components.

Again, these aren't components where we want to compromise.

A timing belt might look relatively straightforward, but the complete timing drive can include tensioners, idlers and other associated components.

And the consequences of something going wrong can be considerably greater than the cost of the component itself.

The same principle applies to timing chains.

That's why our approach to timing work is about identifying the correct system and carrying out the repair properly – not simply replacing the most obvious component.

For customers coming to Meadowfield for a timing belt or timing chain replacement, having INA and Schaeffler's OE expertise behind the parts supply chain is extremely relevant.

FAG – wheel bearings, steering and suspension

The third major name is FAG.

FAG covers Schaeffler's wheel-bearing and steering and suspension portfolio within 1TEC.

Wheel-bearing technology has evolved considerably.

Modern bearing and hub assemblies can incorporate components associated with systems such as ABS and wheel-speed measurement, while correct installation procedures and tightening specifications remain critical to bearing life.

It's another component that can look relatively simple from the outside while doing an extremely important job.

And, just as with our brakes, clutches and timing components, it's an area where we want to know the quality and engineering behind what we're fitting.

REPXPERT – knowledge behind the component

Perhaps one of the most valuable parts of the Schaeffler relationship isn't a component at all.

It's REPXPERT.

Schaeffler uses REPXPERT to provide workshops with technical information, repair assistance, training and information on specialist tooling. Schaeffler specifically describes its support as including practical training, workshop repair assistance and special-tool development.

That's hugely relevant to where the independent motor trade is heading.

Cars aren't getting simpler.

We're dealing with increasingly sophisticated transmissions, hybrid systems, complex timing arrangements, advanced electronics and components that can require very specific installation procedures.

Independent garages therefore need more than access to parts.

We need access to knowledge.

That's one of the major reasons 1TEC appealed to us.

The technology continues to evolve

Schaeffler's involvement isn't limited to traditional petrol and diesel vehicles either.

The company already provides repair solutions for electrified vehicles, including LuK components for hybrid drivetrains and INA thermal-management technology for combustion, hybrid and fully electric vehicles.

For Meadowfield, that's important.

We're building the workshop for the cars our customers drive today, but we also need to be prepared for the vehicles they'll bring us tomorrow.

That means choosing technical partners that are developing alongside the vehicle manufacturers themselves.

Why Schaeffler matters to Meadowfield

When you look at the sheer range of systems Schaeffler touches, its place within 1TEC becomes obvious.

LuK gives us clutch, DMF and double-clutch transmission expertise.

INA gives us timing, auxiliary drive, cooling and engine-system expertise.

FAG gives us wheel-bearing, steering and suspension expertise.

And REPXPERT puts technical information, training and repair support behind those products.

It's a relationship that touches an enormous amount of the work we carry out every week at Meadowfield Auto Centre.

But the common thread running through all of it is something we believe strongly in:

The right repair starts with understanding the system – and using components engineered to do the job properly.

We're still an independent garage. We still decide how Meadowfield operates, which repairs we undertake and what standards we expect.

What 1TEC gives us is closer access to companies such as Schaeffler – companies that aren't simply selling parts for modern vehicles, but are involved in developing the technology inside them.

That's the kind of support we want behind our workshop.

Still independent. Still Meadowfield. Just stronger.
