Modern automatic gearboxes are sophisticated pieces of engineering.
Like an engine, many automatic transmissions rely on the correct oil or transmission fluid for lubrication, cooling and operation.
At Meadowfield Auto Centre in Ponteland, Northumberland, we provide dynamic automatic gearbox oil servicing and transmission fluid replacement for a wide range of suitable automatic vehicles.
That includes applications using transmissions from manufacturers including ZF, Volkswagen Group, Aisin and Mercedes-Benz, subject to the requirements of the individual vehicle and gearbox.
Because there's one thing that's particularly important with automatic transmissions:
They're not all the same.
What is automatic gearbox servicing?
An automatic gearbox contains specialist oil or automatic transmission fluid (ATF).
Depending on the transmission design, that fluid can perform several important functions within the gearbox.
Over time and through use, transmission fluid can deteriorate and become contaminated.
An automatic gearbox service replaces transmission fluid in accordance with the requirements of the particular transmission.
But the correct service depends entirely on which gearbox is fitted to the vehicle.
That's why our starting point is always identification.
The right gearbox. The right fluid. The right service.
What is dynamic gearbox oil servicing?
A conventional transmission fluid change normally drains the fluid that can leave the gearbox naturally.
However, depending on the transmission design, a proportion of the old fluid can remain elsewhere within the system.
A dynamic automatic gearbox oil service is designed to exchange a greater proportion of the transmission fluid where the gearbox and vehicle are suitable for this method.
The aim isn't to use a more complicated process simply for the sake of it.
It's to use the appropriate servicing method for the transmission we're working on.
Dynamic servicing isn't automatically appropriate for every gearbox or every vehicle.
We assess the application first.
Is a dynamic gearbox service the same as a gearbox flush?
You'll often see terms such as:
- Gearbox flush
- Transmission flush
- ATF flush
- Gearbox oil change
- Dynamic oil change
- Transmission fluid exchange
used interchangeably online.
They can mean different things.
At Meadowfield, we prefer the term dynamic gearbox oil servicing or dynamic transmission fluid exchange.
The important question isn't what the machine or process is called.
It's whether the correct servicing method and correct fluid are being used for the particular transmission.
Which automatic gearboxes can you service?
There are numerous automatic transmission designs in use across modern vehicles.
Meadowfield's automatic gearbox servicing covers a range of suitable applications, including:
ZF automatic gearboxes
ZF is one of the world's major transmission manufacturers, supplying automatic gearboxes to numerous vehicle manufacturers.
Its transmissions are fitted to vehicles from brands including BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover and others.
Two particularly well-known transmission families are:
- ZF 6HP
- ZF 8HP
Correct fluid specification and servicing procedure are particularly important with these sophisticated transmissions.
Volkswagen Group DSG gearboxes
DSG — Direct Shift Gearbox — is Volkswagen Group's terminology for its dual-clutch transmission technology.
DSG gearboxes can be found across vehicles from Volkswagen, Audi, Škoda and SEAT/CUPRA.
But there isn't one universal DSG gearbox.
Examples include:
- DQ250
- DQ381
- DQ500
These are wet-clutch DSG transmissions with specific servicing requirements.
Other DSG designs use different technology and aren't serviced in exactly the same way.
That's why simply saying “it's a DSG” isn't enough.
We identify the transmission first.
Aisin automatic transmissions
Aisin automatic transmissions are used across a wide range of European and Asian vehicles.
Different Aisin transmissions require different fluids and servicing requirements, so again the exact transmission application matters.
Mercedes-Benz automatic gearboxes
Mercedes-Benz has used several generations of automatic transmission technology.
These include the widely known:
- 7G-Tronic
- 9G-Tronic
These transmissions have their own servicing requirements and fluid specifications.
How do I know which gearbox my car has?
Often, you don't.
And you shouldn't have to.
Two cars that look almost identical can sometimes use different transmissions depending on their engine, model year, drivetrain and specification.
The information displayed on a vehicle advert or registration document may simply describe it as automatic.
That isn't enough for us.
Before advising on an automatic gearbox service, we identify the vehicle and transmission application so we can establish the appropriate requirements.
If you don't know which gearbox your vehicle has, send us your registration and we'll check.
Why does the correct gearbox oil matter?
Automatic transmission fluids are highly specialised.
Just as modern engines can require very specific engine-oil approvals, modern transmissions can require specific transmission fluids designed for their particular application.
Two automatic transmission fluids that look similar aren't necessarily interchangeable.
The correct fluid can depend on:
- Transmission manufacturer
- Gearbox type
- Vehicle application
- Manufacturer specification
That's why Meadowfield doesn't approach automatic gearbox servicing as simply “changing some gearbox oil.”
Correct identification comes first.
Our relationship with specialist lubricant manufacturer MPM Oil through the 1TEC Auto Hub network complements our specification-led approach to oils and fluids.
ZF gearbox servicing
Our relationship with ZF Aftermarket through 1TEC Auto Hub is particularly relevant to automatic transmission servicing.
ZF isn't simply a gearbox-parts brand.
ZF manufactures automatic transmissions.
Its technology is fitted as original equipment across vehicles produced by numerous manufacturers.
That includes the highly regarded ZF 8HP automatic transmission family, used extensively across modern vehicles.
ZF publishes technical information relating to servicing its transmission systems, including the use of the appropriate ZF LifeguardFluid specifications.
For Meadowfield, that reinforces our fundamental approach:
Follow the requirements of the gearbox that's actually fitted to the vehicle.
DSG expertise and LuK training
Dual-clutch transmissions require a different understanding from conventional torque-converter automatics.
Meadowfield has invested in technician training covering LuK DSG and double-clutch transmission technology, including operation, diagnosis and repair.
Our technician training has included IMI-accredited LuK Direct Shift Gearbox training, supporting our understanding of modern dual-clutch transmission systems.
LuK is part of Schaeffler, one of the technical partners within the 1TEC Auto Hub network.
That training is important because:
A DSG service and a DSG repair are not the same thing.
Does my automatic gearbox need servicing?
That depends on the gearbox.
There isn't one universal automatic gearbox service interval that applies to every vehicle.
Requirements can vary according to:
- Transmission type
- Manufacturer
- Vehicle application
- Age and mileage
- Previous servicing
- Operating conditions
Manufacturer and transmission-maker guidance can also differ.
That's why we don't publish one blanket “all automatic gearboxes should be serviced every X miles” recommendation.
Instead, we identify the transmission and establish what is appropriate for that particular vehicle.
What are the benefits of automatic gearbox servicing?
Where servicing is appropriate, replacing ageing transmission fluid helps maintain the fluid responsible for supporting the gearbox's operation, lubrication and thermal management.
Automatic transmission servicing is fundamentally preventative maintenance.
It isn't a miracle cure for a damaged gearbox.
That's an important distinction.
Will a gearbox service fix a gearbox fault?
Not necessarily.
If an automatic gearbox already has a mechanical or electronic fault, replacing the transmission fluid doesn't automatically repair it.
Symptoms such as:
- Gearbox warning messages
- Slipping
- Severe juddering
- Loss of drive
- Abnormal noises
- Delayed engagement
- Transmission fault codes
may require diagnosis or specialist transmission repair rather than routine servicing.
We don't want to sell a customer an oil service and imply it will repair an underlying gearbox problem.
Where the symptoms suggest something more significant, we'll advise accordingly.
Diagnose. Don't guess.
Can changing gearbox oil damage an automatic gearbox?
This is a common concern.
Servicing doesn't repair existing internal wear, and the condition of the transmission needs to be considered before work is undertaken.
That's another reason we don't treat every automatic vehicle identically.
If the history or condition of a transmission gives us reason to believe routine servicing may not be appropriate, we'll discuss that with you rather than simply proceeding.
The objective is appropriate maintenance — not selling a service at any cost.
Dynamic servicing isn't right for every gearbox
This is worth stating clearly.
We offer dynamic automatic gearbox servicing, but that doesn't mean we dynamically service every automatic transmission that comes through the door.
Different transmission technologies require different approaches.
Some require conventional servicing.
Some have filters or other service components that need consideration.
Some have specific filling or checking requirements.
And some vehicles may not be suitable for routine fluid exchange because of their condition or an existing fault.
Our job is to establish what is appropriate for your gearbox.
Automatic gearbox servicing for modern vehicles
Automatic transmissions have become increasingly common and increasingly sophisticated.
That includes:
- Torque-converter automatics
- DSG and dual-clutch transmissions
- Multi-speed automatic transmissions
- Hybrid transmission systems
And other manufacturer-specific designs.
Meadowfield continues to develop its technical knowledge as these systems evolve.
Our technician training, relationships with organisations including ZF, Schaeffler/LuK and MPM Oil, and membership of 1TEC Auto Hub all support that development.
The technology changes.
So our knowledge has to change with it.

Frequently asked questions
What is a dynamic automatic gearbox service?
Dynamic servicing exchanges a greater proportion of the transmission fluid than may be removed through a conventional drain on suitable gearbox applications. The appropriate method depends on the transmission.
Is a dynamic gearbox service the same as a gearbox flush?
The terms are often used interchangeably, but they don't always describe exactly the same process. We use dynamic gearbox oil servicing to describe the controlled fluid-exchange service we offer on suitable transmissions.
How often should automatic gearbox oil be changed?
There is no single interval applicable to every automatic gearbox. The appropriate servicing requirements depend on the transmission, vehicle and applicable technical information.
Do DSG gearboxes need servicing?
Some DSG transmissions have scheduled fluid servicing requirements. However, different DSG gearboxes use different designs, so the exact transmission needs to be identified first.
Do you service ZF 8HP gearboxes?
We offer servicing for suitable ZF automatic transmission applications, including vehicles fitted with transmissions from the ZF 8HP family. We identify the exact transmission and requirements before advising on the service.
Can you service BMW automatic gearboxes?
Many BMW models use automatic transmissions manufactured by ZF, including versions of the ZF 8HP. The exact gearbox fitted depends on the vehicle. We can identify the transmission from your vehicle details and advise accordingly.
Do you service Range Rover and Land Rover automatic gearboxes?
Various Jaguar Land Rover vehicles use ZF automatic transmissions. We can establish the transmission fitted to the individual vehicle and advise whether we can provide the appropriate service.
Can you service VW, Audi, Škoda and SEAT DSG gearboxes?
Yes, we can service suitable Volkswagen Group DSG applications, subject to identifying the exact gearbox and its servicing requirements.
Will changing my gearbox oil fix a gearbox problem?
Not necessarily. A gearbox service is maintenance rather than a guaranteed repair for an existing transmission fault. Where symptoms indicate a potential gearbox problem, diagnosis or specialist repair may be more appropriate.
