1TEC Partner Spotlight: ZF – The Engineering Behind the Gearbox

As part of our 1TEC Partner Spotlight series, we're looking at the companies behind the 1TEC Auto Hub network, the technology they develop and why having closer access to that expertise matters to us at Meadowfield Auto Centre.

This time, we're looking at ZF.

And perhaps more than any of the partners we've covered so far, ZF demonstrates the difference between a company that simply supplies replacement parts and a company that actually engineers the systems fitted to the vehicle in the first place.

For Meadowfield, the most obvious example is the automatic gearbox.

Because when we talk about a ZF gearbox, we're not talking about a brand making replacement components for somebody else's transmission.

ZF makes the transmission.

The people behind the gearbox

ZF is one of the world's major automotive technology suppliers, developing complete driveline systems for vehicle manufacturers.

Its transmission technology can be found across a huge range of vehicles, but one name in particular has become synonymous with modern automatic transmissions:

ZF 8HP.

The 8HP is ZF's eight-speed automatic transmission family. It entered series production in 2009 and became one of ZF's most successful products. Today the technology has evolved through multiple generations and into electrified applications.

That's an important distinction for us.

When ZF publishes information about how a ZF transmission should be serviced, which fluid it requires or how its oil level should be checked, that information is coming from the company that engineered the gearbox.

That's about as close to the source as an independent workshop can get.

The ZF 8HP

The ZF 8HP is a great example of how sophisticated a modern automatic gearbox has become.

ZF designed the transmission around efficiency, packaging, shift quality and the ability to work across a broad range of vehicle applications. Current versions can accommodate torque outputs extending up to 1,000Nm, depending on application.

Different versions of the 8HP have been used by numerous vehicle manufacturers.

ZF's own servicing documentation, for example, identifies 8HP applications across manufacturers including BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover, Chrysler and Maserati.

And the story isn't finished.

In February 2026, ZF and BMW announced a new long-term agreement covering the continued supply and development of the 8HP into the late 2030s, with particular emphasis on electrified drivetrains.

So although we tend to associate automatic gearbox servicing with conventional petrol and diesel vehicles, the technology itself is continuing into the hybrid era.

"Sealed for life"?

This is where things get particularly interesting.

One of the most common phrases surrounding modern automatic gearboxes is:

"It's sealed for life."

But that phrase needs considerably more context.

ZF itself states that its automatic transmissions are generally filled with lifetime oil.

However, ZF also acknowledges that numerous factors affect the service life of a transmission in real-world operation and recommends an oil change after 150,000km for its transmissions. Under high temperatures, high loads or where the vehicle's previous use is unknown, ZF says changing the oil at shorter intervals can make sense.

That's an important distinction.

"Lifetime fill" doesn't mean transmission fluid somehow becomes immune to heat, ageing, contamination and use.

Automatic transmission fluid has a very demanding job to do.

And just like engine oil, its condition matters.

Transmission fluid is an engineered component

One of the themes running through our 1TEC Partner Spotlight series has been the importance of using the correct specification, rather than simply something that appears similar.

That's particularly important with automatic transmissions.

ZF develops its own LifeguardFluid products for its transmissions.

For example, ZF states that LifeguardFluid 8 was specifically developed for its 8HP transmissions and certain 6HP applications. It also warns that using an unsuitable oil can affect shift quality and, in the worst cases, contribute to transmission failure.

That's why we don't regard gearbox oil as a generic fluid.

The correct gearbox.
The correct specification.
The correct fluid.
The correct procedure.

All four matter.

This is why Meadowfield invested in automatic gearbox servicing

In 2026, we expanded our workshop capabilities with dynamic automatic gearbox oil servicing.

It wasn't about simply adding another machine to the workshop.

It was about recognising that more of the vehicles coming through our doors use sophisticated automatic and double-clutch transmissions – and that those vehicles increasingly need specialist maintenance.

Our gearbox servicing capability covers applications including ZF 6HP and 8HP, alongside DSG/DCT, Aisin and Mercedes-Benz automatic transmission applications.

But identifying the gearbox comes first.

We need to know what transmission we're dealing with, what fluid specification it requires, how much fluid it uses and what servicing procedure applies.

That's where relationships with organisations such as ZF become particularly valuable.

Servicing a ZF 8HP properly

An automatic gearbox oil service isn't simply:

Drain oil. Add oil. Done.

ZF's own procedure for the 8HP demonstrates why.

Its technical information specifies an oil-temperature window when checking the transmission level. The procedure involves running the engine, cycling through transmission positions and gears, monitoring transmission-fluid temperature and establishing the final level at the specified temperature.

Depending on the transmission, servicing can also involve replacing the oil filter or an entire plastic sump assembly containing an integrated filter.

ZF consequently supplies dedicated oil-change kits for transmissions including the 5HP, 6HP and 8HP, containing the appropriate components for the particular gearbox.

That's exactly why automatic gearbox servicing should be treated as a technical procedure rather than simply another fluid change.

MPM and ZF – specification meets engineering

This is also where the strength of the wider 1TEC partner network starts to become clear.

We've already looked at MPM, whose expertise lies heavily in identifying the correct oils and fluids for individual vehicle applications.

ZF brings another dimension.

ZF actually engineers and manufactures the transmission.

So when we're working with a ZF gearbox, we're able to draw on technical information originating from the company responsible for the system itself.

The two areas complement each other:

MPM helps us navigate increasingly complex lubricant specifications. ZF gives us direct insight into the transmission engineering behind them.

For Meadowfield, that's considerably more useful than simply having a catalogue containing a bottle of gearbox oil.

More than automatic gearboxes

ZF's expertise extends considerably beyond the 8HP.

The company develops technology across transmissions, driveline, steering, braking, chassis and electrified vehicle systems.

ZF Aftermarket also brings together some extremely well-established automotive brands and product technologies.

That wider engineering capability matters because vehicles don't operate as collections of completely independent components.

The gearbox interacts with the engine or electric drive system.

The driveline transfers that torque to the wheels.

The chassis controls how the vehicle behaves.

Electronic systems increasingly connect all of them.

Understanding the complete vehicle is becoming increasingly important to repairing it correctly.

The OE connection matters

This is the same principle we discussed when looking at Pagid and Schaeffler.

We place considerable value on suppliers with genuine original-equipment engineering experience.

There are plenty of companies capable of producing something that physically fits a vehicle.

That's not our only consideration.

We want to know:

Who engineered it? What specification does it meet? What technical information supports it? And are we comfortable fitting or using it in a customer's vehicle?

ZF gives us a particularly powerful example because the connection couldn't be much clearer.

When we're servicing a ZF 8HP, the company providing the technical expertise through the 1TEC network is also the company whose name is on the gearbox.

Looking towards hybrid vehicles

ZF also demonstrates why joining 1TEC isn't simply about maintaining the cars of yesterday.

The latest generations of the 8HP have been designed around electrification.

ZF's fourth-generation 8HP incorporates mild-hybrid and plug-in-hybrid variants, with electric motors and power electronics integrated into the transmission architecture.

ZF is now developing the 8HP evo, which supports 48V mild-hybrid as well as high-voltage hybrid and plug-in-hybrid applications.

That's significant for an independent garage.

The familiar mechanical systems aren't necessarily disappearing overnight.

They're evolving.

And workshops have to evolve with them.

Why ZF matters to Meadowfield

When we decided to invest in automatic gearbox servicing, we weren't trying to turn Meadowfield into a transmission rebuilding specialist.

Our philosophy remains the same as it is with diagnostics:

Know what we can do properly. Invest in the equipment and knowledge to do it well. And know when a job requires a specialist.

ZF fits that philosophy perfectly.

It gives us access to technical knowledge from one of the companies actually developing the transmission systems we're servicing.

Through 1TEC, that sits alongside Shell's lubrication expertise, MPM's specialist fluids, VARTA's battery technology, Pagid's braking expertise and Schaeffler's clutch and transmission knowledge.

Individually, they're impressive companies.

Together, they start to create something much more valuable: a technical support network around the independent workshop.

That's ultimately what joining 1TEC means to us.

We're still making our own decisions.

We're still choosing how we repair and maintain our customers' vehicles.

We're still Meadowfield Auto Centre.

But we're increasingly able to back those decisions with information and expertise from some of the companies that engineer the technology inside the cars we're working on.

And when you're servicing something as sophisticated as a modern automatic transmission, that matters.

Still independent. Still Meadowfield. Just stronger.
