Meadowfield Technician Completes IMI-Accredited LuK DSG Training at LKQ Academy

Modern automatic transmissions are becoming increasingly sophisticated.

For an independent garage, investing in equipment to work on those vehicles is important. But the equipment is only part of the equation.

The technician using it needs the knowledge to understand the system, diagnose it correctly and carry out the appropriate repair.

That's why technician training has been an important part of the development of Meadowfield Auto Centre in Ponteland, Northumberland.

And in December 2025, that investment took one of our technicians directly into an area that has since become increasingly important to Meadowfield.

DSG and double-clutch transmission technology.

IMI-accredited DSG training for Meadowfield technician Alex Ieronymides

In December 2025, Meadowfield technician Alex Ieronymides attended the LKQ Academy to undertake specialist training in Direct Shift Gearbox technology.

Alex participated in the:

LuK Direct Shift Gearbox – Operation, Diagnosis & Repair Training Course

The training resulted in an IMI Accredited Professional Development Certificate, issued on 10 December 2025, carrying 13 IMI CPD credits.

That matters.

The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) is the professional body for people working in the automotive sector. Its Professional Development Certificate recognises participation in professional learning activities and provides recognised evidence supporting continuing professional development. IMI states that these programmes are quality assured by the organisation.

For Meadowfield, however, the significance goes considerably further than another certificate on the wall.

Training at the LKQ Academy

Alex's training was carried out through the LKQ Academy.

LKQ Academy provides automotive technical training across the UK and Europe, working with a wide range of automotive manufacturers, component suppliers and technical organisations. Its current partner roster includes names such as Schaeffler, Shell, Pagid, Valeo, VARTA and ZF.

Those names should look increasingly familiar to anyone following Meadowfield's development.

They also sit very close to the technical ecosystem now surrounding us through 1TEC Auto Hub.

In fact, 1TEC specifically identifies training through LKQ Academy as one of the benefits available to garages within the 1TEC Auto Hub network.

That creates an interesting connection.

Alex completed this training before Meadowfield became part of 1TEC Auto Hub.

We were already using the training infrastructure and technical expertise that would subsequently become an important part of our relationship with 1TEC.

LuK, Schaeffler and DSG technology

The other important name on Alex's certificate is LuK.

LuK is part of Schaeffler, one of the major technical partners behind 1TEC Auto Hub.

Schaeffler is an original-equipment supplier to vehicle manufacturers and provides aftermarket repair solutions across transmission, engine and chassis systems.

Within that portfolio, LuK specialises in clutch and gearbox technology, while INA covers areas including timing systems and FAG operates across wheel bearing, steering and suspension applications. Schaeffler also supports technicians through its REPXPERT technical platform and services.

That makes the relationship particularly relevant to the training Alex undertook.

The course wasn't generic automatic gearbox training.

It was specifically concerned with Direct Shift Gearbox operation, diagnosis and repair.

What is a DSG gearbox?

DSG stands for Direct Shift Gearbox and is commonly associated with Volkswagen Group vehicles, including models from Volkswagen, Audi, Škoda, SEAT and CUPRA.

Rather than using the conventional arrangement found in a traditional torque-converter automatic transmission, DSG technology uses a double-clutch transmission.

Broadly, one clutch can operate one group of gears while another operates the alternate group. By preparing the next gear before the shift is required, the transmission can change gear extremely quickly.

But the term DSG doesn't describe one single gearbox.

There are numerous transmission families and variants.

These include familiar units such as the DQ200, DQ250, DQ381 and DQ500, among others.

Some use dry clutch systems.

Others use wet clutch systems operating with transmission fluid.

Their construction, servicing requirements, clutch systems, fluid specifications and repair procedures can differ significantly.

That is precisely why technical knowledge matters.

DSG diagnosis is not the same as reading a fault code

Modern transmission diagnosis increasingly involves communication between mechanical, hydraulic and electronic systems.

A diagnostic trouble code may point a technician towards an area of the system, but it doesn't automatically identify which component should be replaced.

Technicians may need to consider information from transmission control systems alongside operating behaviour, live data, clutch operation, adaptation values and mechanical condition.

Understanding how the transmission is supposed to operate is therefore fundamental to understanding why it isn't operating correctly.

That's one of the reasons we value training that covers:

operation, diagnosis and repair.

Those three words on Alex's certificate are important.

The objective isn't simply learning how to remove and install a component.

It's developing a better understanding of the system around it.

DSG servicing and DSG repair are different things

This is another distinction we think is important for customers to understand.

A DSG gearbox service and a DSG gearbox repair are not interchangeable.

Certain wet-clutch DSG transmissions require scheduled fluid servicing using the appropriate specification and procedure.

That maintenance doesn't mean a transmission with an existing mechanical, hydraulic, electronic or clutch fault can necessarily be repaired simply by changing its oil.

Likewise, clutch replacement on a double-clutch transmission is a considerably different operation from routine gearbox servicing.

Identifying the transmission correctly and understanding what the vehicle actually requires has to come first.

That's why Meadowfield's investment in automatic gearbox servicing has been accompanied by investment in technician knowledge.

Training before equipment

There's an important point in the chronology here.

Alex completed this specialist DSG training in December 2025.

Meadowfield subsequently continued developing its automatic transmission capability, including investment in dynamic automatic gearbox oil servicing.

That's the order we like.

Understand the technology.

Develop the people.

Invest in the equipment.

Then build the service around it.

A machine by itself doesn't make a garage an automatic transmission specialist.

Knowledge of the transmission determines how that equipment should be used — and when it shouldn't be used at all.

A direct connection to 1TEC Auto Hub

Looking back at this training from where Meadowfield stands today makes it particularly interesting.

The organisations surrounding Alex's course now connect directly into Meadowfield's 1TEC Auto Hub story.

LKQ Academy provided the training environment.

LuK provided the transmission expertise.

Schaeffler sits behind LuK.

REPXPERT provides technical information and support for professional repairs.

The Institute of the Motor Industry accredited the professional development.

And today, Schaeffler is a technical partner of 1TEC Auto Hub, while 1TEC provides its member garages with access to training through LKQ Academy.

That's not a relationship we've constructed retrospectively for a website.

It's documented in Alex's training history.

Meadowfield was already travelling in the same direction

This is also why we describe joining 1TEC as a natural progression for Meadowfield.

We didn't join a network and suddenly decide that training, OE technical expertise and modern vehicle technology were important.

Those things were already influencing how we developed the garage.

Before becoming a 1TEC Auto Hub workshop, a Meadowfield technician was already sitting in the LKQ Academy undertaking IMI-accredited LuK training in DSG operation, diagnosis and repair.

That tells part of the story better than any marketing statement could.

The relationship with 1TEC strengthens a direction Meadowfield was already travelling in.

Investing in technician training at Meadowfield Auto Centre

Cars don't stop developing when a technician qualifies.

A technician entering the trade years ago may now routinely encounter technologies that either didn't exist or weren't commonplace during their original training.

DSG and double-clutch transmissions, wet timing belts, increasingly sophisticated engine-management systems, AGM and EFB battery management, ADAS, hybrid drivetrains and high-voltage electric vehicles are all examples of how the technical landscape continues to change.

The IMI itself describes continuing development and upskilling as increasingly important as automotive skills requirements evolve.

Our approach at Meadowfield is therefore straightforward:

training doesn't finish when somebody becomes qualified.

It continues throughout their career.

Better training supports better decisions

We don't invest in training simply so that we can add another service to the Meadowfield website.

Training also helps technicians recognise the limits of what should be done.

There are occasions where a vehicle requires manufacturer-level information, equipment or highly specialised repair capability.

In those circumstances, we'd rather recognise that point and recommend the appropriate specialist than continue replacing components at a customer's expense.

That's particularly important with sophisticated transmission systems.

Knowing when to proceed is valuable. Knowing when not to proceed can be equally valuable.

DSG and automatic gearbox servicing in Ponteland

Today, Meadowfield Auto Centre provides automatic gearbox servicing in Ponteland, Northumberland, alongside our wider servicing, diagnostics, repairs and MOT work.

Our automatic transmission work can cover applications including DSG and DCT transmissions, ZF automatic gearboxes and other manufacturer-specific automatic transmission systems, subject to correct vehicle and transmission identification.

And identification matters.

Before deciding on the correct servicing approach, we need to know which gearbox is actually fitted to the vehicle.

That determines the fluid specification, quantity, filter arrangement, servicing procedure and other technical requirements.

There is no meaningful universal “automatic gearbox oil.”

Building DSG knowledge at Meadowfield

Alex's December 2025 training is therefore much more than an interesting photograph from Meadowfield's history.

It provides a documented point in the development of our transmission capability.

It connects:

Meadowfield Auto Centre in Ponteland with LKQ Academy, IMI-accredited professional development, LuK, Schaeffler, REPXPERT, DSG technology, double-clutch transmissions, gearbox diagnosis and repair, and now 1TEC Auto Hub.

Those relationships matter because they're part of the technical infrastructure behind the services we provide.

And they demonstrate something we've believed for a long time:

the equipment in a modern workshop has to develop, but so do the people using it.

Investing in training, investing in the future

As vehicle technology changes, Meadowfield will continue investing in our technicians.

Sometimes that means learning about an entirely new technology.

Sometimes it means going deeper into a system our technicians already encounter.

And sometimes, as with Alex's LuK Direct Shift Gearbox Operation, Diagnosis & Repair training at LKQ Academy, it means building knowledge that subsequently becomes even more relevant as the business develops.

Today we can look back at that certificate and see many of the relationships that now sit behind Meadowfield's membership of 1TEC Auto Hub.

But in December 2025, the objective was much simpler.

Learn more. Understand the technology. Become better at the job.

That's still the objective today.

Still independent. Still Meadowfield. Just stronger.
