1TEC Partner Spotlight: VARTA

1TEC Partner Spotlight: VARTA
As part of our 1TEC Partner Spotlight series, we're looking at the companies behind the 1TEC Auto Hub network, the expertise they bring and why those relationships matter to us at Meadowfield Auto Centre.
Following Shell and MPM, we're turning to something found in every car but which has become considerably more sophisticated over the years: the battery.
And 1TEC's battery partner is VARTA.
A battery isn't just a battery anymore
Battery replacement used to be relatively straightforward.
Identify the correct size and capacity, remove the old battery, fit the replacement and reconnect it.
On many modern vehicles, that's no longer the whole job.
Today's battery may have to support automatic start-stop, sophisticated vehicle electronics, safety systems, heated equipment, infotainment and numerous control modules, often while the engine isn't even running.
VARTA explains that this increased electrical demand is one of the reasons modern start-stop vehicles require technologies such as EFB and AGM, rather than conventional starter batteries.
For us, that's where having a battery specialist involved with 1TEC becomes particularly valuable.
VARTA and 1TEC Auto Hub
VARTA is the battery partner within the 1TEC Auto Hub network.
But, as with the other partners we've highlighted, what interests us isn't simply having access to another product.
It's the technical information behind it.
VARTA provides professional workshops with resources covering battery selection, battery location, fitting information, diagnostic advice and battery technology through its Partner Portal.
That's exactly the sort of support we want from the brands associated with Meadowfield.
AGM, EFB or conventional?
One of the most important parts of modern battery replacement is identifying which battery technology the vehicle actually requires.
Three common types are:
Conventional batteries – typically used on vehicles without start-stop systems.
EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) – designed for increased cycling demands and commonly found on vehicles with simpler start-stop systems.
AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) – designed for more demanding applications, including advanced start-stop systems, high electrical loads and vehicles using regenerative braking.
VARTA states that an AGM-equipped vehicle should continue to use an AGM battery. An EFB application can use the appropriate EFB replacement and, in suitable circumstances, may be upgraded to AGM.
So simply finding a battery that physically fits the tray isn't enough.
The technology needs to be right too.
And sometimes the vehicle needs to be told
There's another important difference between changing batteries on older and newer vehicles.
On many modern cars, fitting the battery isn't necessarily the end of the replacement procedure.
Vehicles equipped with a Battery Management System (BMS) can monitor battery condition and adapt charging strategy accordingly. When a replacement is installed, some vehicles require the new battery to be registered or adapted to the vehicle using diagnostic equipment.
Certain Volkswagen Group and BMW applications, for example, use specific battery-registration procedures. VARTA provides technical guidance covering these systems and their coding requirements.
Failing to follow the correct procedure can affect the way the vehicle manages the replacement battery and may contribute to premature deterioration.
This is why we don't treat modern battery replacement as simply disconnect, replace and send the car away.
Battery replacement and diagnostics increasingly overlap
This is particularly relevant to the way we work at Meadowfield.
Low battery voltage can create all sorts of symptoms on a modern vehicle.
When voltage becomes unstable, electronic control units can begin recording faults across multiple vehicle systems. That means a car presenting with numerous apparently unrelated fault codes doesn't necessarily have numerous unrelated failures.
Sometimes, voltage is where the investigation needs to begin.
It's another reason we test rather than guess.
And when a battery does require replacement, we want to know we're fitting the correct technology and carrying out any necessary registration or adaptation afterwards.
Why we choose VARTA
There's substantial automotive manufacturing experience behind the VARTA name.
VARTA states that its batteries are fitted as original equipment by numerous vehicle manufacturers, and its professional workshop material says seven out of ten newly manufactured AGM start-stop vehicles in Europe are fitted with a VARTA battery.
That OE presence matters to us.
Our philosophy with replacement parts isn't to search for the cheapest component that happens to fit.
We want products that are appropriate for the vehicle, backed by good technical information and produced by companies with genuine expertise in the systems we're working on.
That's exactly why VARTA makes sense within the 1TEC network – and why it makes sense for Meadowfield.
The vehicle is changing. So is the battery.
Electrification also means the role of the traditional low-voltage battery isn't disappearing.
Modern vehicles – including hybrids and electric vehicles – still rely on low-voltage electrical systems to operate control units, safety systems and other vehicle functions.
VARTA's current AGM range is designed not only around start-stop applications but also includes applications for xEV vehicles, reflecting how battery technology is evolving alongside the wider vehicle parc.
For an independent garage preparing for the vehicles we'll be maintaining over the next decade, access to companies investing in that technology is increasingly important.
Another reason 1TEC fits Meadowfield
There's a common thread developing through our 1TEC Partner Spotlight series.
With Shell, it was access to lubricant expertise and manufacturer-specific oil requirements.
With MPM, it was specialist oils and fluids for applications ranging from wet-belt engines to automatic gearbox servicing.
And with VARTA, it's understanding the increasingly sophisticated electrical demands placed on modern vehicle batteries.
Different products. Different areas of the vehicle.
But the principle is the same:
Use the right product. Have access to the right information. Carry out the job properly.
That's exactly the type of relationship we wanted to strengthen by becoming part of 1TEC Auto Hub.
We're still an independent garage. We're still making our own decisions about the vehicles we look after.
We simply have more technical expertise behind us when we make them.
Still independent. Still Meadowfield. Just stronger.
