A garage in a Northumberland town was nominated as one of the best in the UK for its customer service.
Meadowfield Auto Centre in Ponteland, owned by Stephen and Ellie Browne, was a finalist in the Best Single-Site Garage category at the 2026 IAAF Garage Awards, held during the Automechanika Birmingham trade exhibition.
The Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation (IAAF) Garage Awards celebrate excellence in the independent garage sector, focusing on customer service, business operations, workshop performance, marketing and promotion, and overall professionalism and growth.
Meadowfield was among the finalists, including Apex Auto Tech, Cleevely Motors, Intelligent Auto, Lawson AutoTech and Mike Knight Autos.
It is Ponteland’s only centrally located garage and MOT station.
At Ponteland High, he completed work experience at the garage he would eventually own.
In December 2016, he purchased the business and rebranded it as Meadowfield Auto Centre.
Ellie joined the company in June 2020, bringing customer service experience from Lloyd BMW/MINI and quickly becoming an integral part of the business.
Just weeks after the birth of their first child in November 2022, Ellie suffered a rare stroke.
After returning home and beginning her recovery, she gradually resumed work and now plays a central role in the business.
Ellie was awarded the inaugural Woman in the Motor Industry – Inspiring Returner Award at a national awards ceremony held at the London Marriott Grosvenor Square in 2025.
Meadowfield Auto Centre operates as an "all-brand" garage offering servicing, MOTs, diagnostics, repairs and more.
With only eight external parking spaces, three workshop ramps and one MOT bay, Stephen said 'Meadowfield Auto Centre has had to become exceptionally efficient'.
"Customers know that when they book with Meadowfield Auto Centre, they can expect their vehicle to be ready for collection the same day, regardless of whether additional work, MOT advisories or MOT failures are identified during inspection," he added.
Stephen said: "Operating within a town of approximately 11,000 people means reputation is everything.
"In a close-knit community where word travels quickly, there is little room for mistakes. This has helped drive a culture of accountability, professionalism and consistently high standards."
Meadowfield Auto Centre carries extensive stock of frequently used service items, including engine oils, sump plug washers and fast-moving consumables, reducing delays and ensuring customer vehicles remain on schedule.
It handles around 11 vehicles per day and prides itself on efficient, same-day turnaround wherever possible.
The business places strong emphasis on customer service, transparency and professionalism.
The team recognises that customers may not always notice immediate changes in their vehicle after service, so they make value visible in other ways, through courtesy, presentation and attention to detail.
Despite limited on-site parking and workshop space, Meadowfield has achieved significant growth in labour sales, customer numbers and MOT volumes without expanding its footprint.
The nomination reflects a business philosophy built on efficiency, customer retention and continuous improvement, rather than rapid expansion.
They said the nomination 'represents far more than business success', and 'recognises years of hard work, personal sacrifice, resilience through adversity and a shared commitment to building one of the UK's leading independent garages'.
