Best independent garage in UK shortlisted in Northumberland

ONE of the best independent garages in the UK has been shortlisted in Northumberland.

Meadowfield Auto Centre, based on Meadowfield Industrial Estate in Ponteland, has been named a finalist in the Independent Garage of the Year category at the 2026 Motor Trader Industry Awards.

The award recognises best practice, innovation and professionalism among non-franchised repair garages across the UK.

The Motor Trader Industry Awards, now in their 36th year, are a major fixture in the UK automotive calendar.

Last year's ceremony attracted around 700 attendees and featured 35 award categories spanning the breadth of the automotive retail sector.

This year’s event will take place on Wednesday, November 18, at the Grosvenor House Hotel on Park Lane in London.

For Meadowfield, the latest nomination is part of a growing list of national recognition.

Earlier this year, the garage was shortlisted for Garage of the Year – Best Single Site at the Automechanika Garage Awards.

Director Ellie Browne was named a finalist in two categories at the 2026 Woman in the Motor Industry Awards.

Stephen Browne, director at Meadowfield Auto Centre, said: "It's getting a little bit surreal now.

"When we found out we'd reached the Garage of the Year final earlier in the year, that was a massive moment for everybody here.

"Then Ellie received her two nominations, and now we've found out Meadowfield is going to another national final.

"We're trying not to get carried away with it, but I think the team are allowed to be a little bit proud."

Meadowfield remains a small, five-person team offering MOTs, servicing, repairs, tyres, and diagnostics to motorists in Ponteland and the surrounding area.

There is no large dealer group or national chain behind the business.

Stephen said: "One nomination is fantastic and you're incredibly grateful for it.

"But when completely separate organisations start recognising different parts of what you're doing, you do begin to feel that maybe all of those little things we've worked on over the years are adding up.

"We haven't suddenly started doing things for awards. We're still opening the doors every morning and doing exactly what we're here to do, looking after cars and looking after customers.

"We just have a mentality here that there's always something we can improve.

"Sometimes they're big changes, but more often they're tiny things that nobody outside the garage would necessarily notice.

"Put enough of those differences together and hopefully they add up to something worthwhile."

Entrants must demonstrate success in areas such as profitable trading, workshop utilisation, and customer retention, supported by financial data and customer testimonials.

Ellie said: "It's brilliant for everybody here. Individual recognition is lovely, but when Meadowfield is shortlisted it feels different because every person in the business has contributed to it. We're a small team.

"Everybody knows our customers, everybody knows what's going on in the workshop and everybody has an impact on the experience somebody has when they come here.

"To see that little team from Ponteland being recognised nationally is really special."
