In Good Company: Award-Winning Garages and the 1TEC Auto Hub Network

Awards aren't what make a good garage.

They don't repair cars, train technicians or look after customers.

But when respected organisations within the automotive industry repeatedly recognise a business for the standards it achieves, that recognition means something.

At Meadowfield Auto Centre in Ponteland, Northumberland, we're fortunate to have experienced that ourselves.

And when we became part of 1TEC Auto Hub, we discovered something particularly interesting.

We weren't simply an award-recognised independent garage joining another garage network.

We were award winners joining an award-winning programme, alongside other award-winning independent garages.

That's pretty good company to keep.

Meadowfield didn't join 1TEC looking for credibility

Our story with industry awards started long before Meadowfield became part of 1TEC Auto Hub.

Before joining the network, Meadowfield had already received three Servicesure awards or recognitions, as well as becoming a Top Garage Awards finalist and an IGA BIG Awards finalist.

Those achievements came from developing Meadowfield independently here in Ponteland.

They reflected years of investment in the workshop, our people, equipment, processes, customer experience and the standards we wanted the business to represent.

That distinction matters to us.

We didn't join 1TEC to become an award-winning garage.

We joined 1TEC as one.

Then we joined an award-winning garage network

There's another layer to the story.

1TEC Auto Hub is itself award-winning.

At the CAT Awards 2026, 1TEC Auto Hub was named Garage Concept of the Year.

The category was decided by public vote, with 1TEC shortlisted alongside AutoCare Network, Bosch Car Service, Castrol Service Network and Eurorepar Car Service Network.

That's significant competition.

And it's particularly relevant to Meadowfield because 1TEC isn't a national chain taking ownership of independent garages.

1TEC describes its network as bringing together leading UK garages committed to customer service, professionalism and trained technicians capable of working on the latest generation of vehicles. Its workshops remain 100% locally owned, while receiving support from the wider national network and its automotive partners.

That's exactly the balance we wanted.

Independent locally. Stronger collectively.

Award winners joining an award-winning programme

What makes the story more interesting is what happens when you look beyond 1TEC itself.

There is considerable independent industry recognition among businesses within the network.

We don't need to turn this into a directory of other garages — that's not what this article is about.

But a few examples demonstrate the calibre of businesses represented.

In 2025, 1TEC publicly celebrated Uckfield Motor Services, D H Price Motors, The MINI Repair Shop and Ferdotti Motor Services after all four were nominated for Independent Garage of the Year at the CAT Awards.

That wasn't an internal 1TEC award.

It was external industry recognition.

And it's representative of something we've noticed repeatedly since looking more closely at the network: businesses within 1TEC regularly appear among the finalists and winners at some of the UK automotive aftermarket's recognised awards.

For Meadowfield, that's important.

Because the standard of a network can be judged, at least in part, by the businesses that choose to be part of it.

We're not interested in collecting badges

There is a danger with garage networks.

Put enough logos on a wall and eventually none of them mean very much.

That's not what attracted us to 1TEC.

We were interested in what sat behind the badge.

Training.

Technical information.

Access to leading automotive brands.

Business development.

Workshop support.

Technology.

And, perhaps just as importantly, the opportunity to be around other independent garage businesses that are trying to improve.

1TEC says its network was developed with key automotive partners to give independent workshops access to the tools, training and business support needed to develop for the future.

That philosophy fits Meadowfield considerably better than simply joining something for another logo to display.

What do award-winning garages have in common?

There isn't one formula.

Some garages become known for technical excellence.

Others develop exceptional customer service.

Some invest heavily in training.

Others lead the industry in sustainability, digital development, community involvement or innovation.

1TEC's own awards illustrate that breadth.

At its 2026 awards, the network recognised members across categories including business acceleration, community involvement, digital development, future-focused innovation, environmental progress, training and development, lasting impact and sustained excellence.

We think that's important.

Because running a good independent garage in 2026 involves considerably more than being able to repair a car.

It means developing technicians.

Investing in equipment.

Understanding new vehicle technology.

Improving processes.

Communicating properly with customers.

Supporting the community around the business.

Adapting to digital technology.

And continually asking:

What can we do better next year than we're doing today?

That's much closer to what awards actually represent to us.

Awards are the evidence, not the objective

We've never believed that entering awards should dictate how Meadowfield operates.

The order has to be the other way around.

Build the business properly first.

If somebody subsequently recognises what you've built, that's something to be proud of.

That's why we're particularly proud that Meadowfield entered the 1TEC Auto Hub network with an established history of industry recognition already behind us.

Our awards didn't come from being part of 1TEC.

They were part of the journey that eventually made 1TEC such a natural fit for Meadowfield.

And Meadowfield keeps moving forward

Joining 1TEC hasn't changed that philosophy.

We're still an independent garage in Ponteland.

We're still locally owned.

We're still responsible for the decisions we make, the people we employ and the standards customers experience when they bring their vehicles to us.

What has changed is the infrastructure around us.

Meadowfield now sits within a national community of independent workshops supported by organisations across the automotive industry, with access to training, technical information, products and expertise designed to help independent garages prepare for increasingly sophisticated vehicles.

And there are now more than 450 workshops within the 1TEC community, according to 1TEC's own communications around its 2026 CAT Awards success.

For a genuinely independent garage, that's a substantial pool of experience.

Surround yourself with businesses that want to improve

There's another benefit to a network that doesn't appear on a parts invoice or training certificate.

The other businesses in it.

Running an independent garage can sometimes be surprisingly isolated.

Every garage has its own workshop, customers, staff and problems to solve.

Put ambitious independent garage owners and teams together, however, and there is an enormous amount they can learn from each other.

What's working?

What isn't?

How are other workshops approaching training?

What technology are they investing in?

How are they adapting to hybrid and electric vehicles?

How are they improving customer communication?

What have they tried that failed?

Sometimes learning what not to do can be just as valuable.

That's one reason the concentration of recognised businesses within 1TEC interests us.

It's not the trophies themselves.

It's what those trophies suggest about the people sitting around the table.

Training. Technology. Investment. Standards.

Those themes should sound familiar if you've followed Meadowfield's development.

We've continued investing in the workshop and our equipment.

We've developed our diagnostic capability.

We've invested in wet-belt replacement, automatic gearbox servicing and preparation for hybrid and electric vehicle maintenance.

We've continued developing our servicing and vehicle inspection processes.

And we've continued investing in the people who actually use that equipment.

That's also why the technical side of 1TEC matters so much to us.

The network brings together expertise from major automotive organisations including Shell, MPM, VARTA, Pagid, Schaeffler, ZF and Valeo, alongside LKQ Euro Car Parts.

That connects Meadowfield with expertise covering areas including engine oils and specialist fluids, modern battery systems, braking technology, timing systems, clutches and double-clutch transmissions, automatic gearboxes, thermal management, electronics and electrification.

So there is a common thread running through the whole story.

Better information. Better training. Better equipment. Better decisions. Higher standards.

Being recognised nationally while remaining local

This is perhaps the part we're most proud of.

Meadowfield isn't a national chain.

We're an independent garage serving Ponteland and the surrounding Northumberland and North East area.

Our workshop is here.

Our team is here.

Our customers are here.

And that's not something we want to change.

What we do want is for the standard of an independent garage in Ponteland to stand comparison with the best independent workshops anywhere in the country.

Industry recognition gives us one external measure of whether we're moving in the right direction.

Being surrounded by other ambitious businesses gives us another opportunity to keep moving.

1TEC's award matters because of what it represents

When 1TEC Auto Hub won Garage Concept of the Year at the CAT Awards 2026, it wasn't competing in isolation.

The shortlist contained several established garage concepts and networks.

For us as a member, that recognition reinforces something we had already concluded ourselves:

1TEC is building something significant within the UK independent aftermarket.

The network describes its objective as preparing independent workshops for an increasingly complex automotive landscape.

That involves technical capability.

But it also involves people, training, business development, customer experience and collaboration.

Those are precisely the areas in which ambitious independent garages need to keep developing.

And the network recognises development, not just size

We particularly like this.

The 1TEC awards aren't simply about which garage is biggest.

Its 2026 categories recognised innovation, sustainability, community contribution, digital development and training, among other areas. The Training and Development category, for example, specifically recognised businesses investing in upskilling their teams and bringing new talent into the industry.

That's much closer to how we think the future of the independent motor trade should be measured.

A garage should be developing its people.

It should be adapting to technology.

It should be thinking about what comes next.

And it should still remember the community outside its workshop doors.

Raising standards together

Perhaps that's the simplest explanation for why Meadowfield and 1TEC fit.

Our philosophy has never been that Meadowfield has reached some imaginary finishing line.

Quite the opposite.

We want to raise standards year after year.

That means recognising where we're strong.

It also means recognising where we can improve.

And one of the best ways to improve is to surround yourself with people and businesses who are trying to do the same thing.

That's what makes the award history across 1TEC relevant to us.

Not because every garage needs another trophy.

But because repeated independent recognition across a network suggests something about the standards, ambition and culture of the businesses within it.

In good company

So yes, we're proud of Meadowfield's own industry recognition.

We're proud that we brought an established awards record with us when we became part of 1TEC Auto Hub.

And we're proud that 1TEC itself is now an award-winning garage concept.

But we're equally interested in what happens next.

What can we learn?

Where can we improve?

What new technology do we need to understand?

Where should we invest?

How do we develop our people?

And how do we make Meadowfield better again?

Because ultimately, that's what connects us with the best businesses we've encountered within the independent motor trade.

The desire to keep improving.

We didn't join 1TEC to become an award-winning garage.

We joined as one.

And now we're part of an award-winning network containing plenty of others.

Award-winning garages. An award-winning programme. One shared ambition to keep raising standards.

For an independent garage in Ponteland, we think that's very good company to keep.

Still independent. Still Meadowfield. Just stronger.
