Meadowfield Technician Completes IMI Level 2 MOT Tester Training at LKQ Academy

MOT testing is one of the most familiar parts of vehicle ownership in the UK, but behind every MOT test is a trained and authorised tester who needs to understand and correctly apply the standards set for the scheme.

For Meadowfield Auto Centre in Ponteland, Northumberland, developing that knowledge within our own team is another part of investing in the long-term technical capability of the garage.

On 28 May 2024, a Meadowfield technician attended the LKQ Academy – MOT Tester IMI Level 2 (Classes 4 & 7) course at Euro Car Parts, Ferryboat Lane, Castletown, Sunderland.

The training provided another important step in developing Meadowfield's in-house MOT expertise.

IMI Level 2 MOT Tester training

The course was specifically designed around the requirements for MOT testing Classes 4 and 7.

For a technician, becoming an MOT tester isn't simply about learning how to use the equipment installed in an MOT bay.

An MOT tester needs to understand the prescribed testing procedures and correctly assess vehicles against the standards applicable to the MOT scheme.

That requires training.

And for Meadowfield, it means developing additional knowledge within the same workshop that carries out our customers' servicing, maintenance, diagnostics and repairs.

What are Class 4 and Class 7 MOTs?

Different types of vehicles fall into different MOT classes.

Class 4 includes most of the passenger cars motorists use every day, together with certain other qualifying vehicles.

Class 7 covers goods vehicles with a design gross weight of more than 3,000kg and up to 3,500kg.

That makes Class 4 and 7 knowledge relevant to both everyday motorists and many businesses operating light commercial vehicles.

For an independent garage serving Ponteland and the surrounding Northumberland and Newcastle area, having this knowledge within the team strengthens our ability to support a broad range of customers and vehicles.

What does an MOT tester inspect?

An MOT is a defined inspection of specific areas of a vehicle against prescribed standards.

Depending on the vehicle, the test considers areas including:

brakes, steering, suspension, tyres and wheels, lights, visibility, seat belts and restraint systems, vehicle structure, exhaust systems and emissions.

The tester isn't simply deciding whether they personally consider a vehicle to be safe.

They are applying the standards prescribed for the MOT test.

That distinction is important.

Consistency, technical knowledge and correct application of the testing standards all matter.

An MOT isn't the same as a service

This is also an important distinction for motorists.

An MOT test and a vehicle service perform different functions.

An MOT assesses specified components against the minimum standards required by the test at the time the vehicle is presented.

A service is concerned with the ongoing maintenance of the vehicle according to its requirements.

A car can therefore pass an MOT while still requiring maintenance.

Likewise, having a vehicle serviced doesn't replace the statutory MOT when one is required.

That's why Meadowfield offers MOT testing and vehicle servicing in Ponteland as separate but complementary services.

MOT knowledge supports the rest of the workshop

MOT tester training also has value beyond the MOT bay.

The systems assessed during an MOT overlap with many of the areas technicians inspect and repair every day.

Brakes.

Tyres.

Steering and suspension.

Lighting.

Vehicle structure.

Emissions.

Understanding the standards applied during an MOT adds another layer of knowledge to the wider inspection and repair work carried out within the workshop.

Training at LKQ Academy in Sunderland

The May 2024 training took place through LKQ Academy at the Euro Car Parts facility on Ferryboat Lane in Sunderland.

That location has subsequently become very familiar to Meadowfield.

During 2025, Meadowfield technicians returned to the Sunderland facility for further technical development covering areas including Chassis Control Systems, Principles of Diagnostics, AdBlue and diesel emissions, Level 2 & 3 Hybrid and Electric Vehicles, and LuK/INA Timing Drive Technology.

Further LuK Direct Shift Gearbox operation, diagnosis and repair training added to that development.

So the May 2024 MOT course now represents an earlier point in a much broader training story.

Building technical capability year after year

When individual training courses are considered separately, each one can look like a relatively small event.

Put them together and something much more significant becomes visible.

In 2024, Meadowfield was developing its in-house MOT testing capability.

During 2025, the team's training expanded across:

chassis and electronic control systems

vehicle diagnostics

AdBlue and diesel emissions

hybrid and electric vehicles

timing-drive technology

DSG and double-clutch transmissions

These aren't simply subjects chosen to fill a training calendar.

They correspond closely with the technology Meadowfield technicians encounter in modern vehicles.

A relationship with LKQ before 1TEC

There is another interesting part of this history.

The May 2024 MOT course shows Meadowfield using LKQ Academy more than two years before our relationship with 1TEC Auto Hub developed.

That matters to the story we're now able to tell.

Our connection with the wider LKQ technical ecosystem didn't begin when Meadowfield joined 1TEC.

Our technicians were already travelling from Ponteland to the LKQ Academy in Sunderland for professional training.

And that relationship subsequently expanded into increasingly technical areas.

It's another reason why becoming part of the 1TEC Auto Hub network feels like a natural progression rather than a change in direction.

Training before responsibility

MOT testing carries a considerable responsibility.

Customers depend on the tester to inspect their vehicle correctly.

The MOT scheme depends on testers applying the required standards consistently.

And the garage needs people who understand the responsibilities associated with carrying out the test.

That's why formal training and continued professional development matter.

Passing an MOT shouldn't be about finding the easiest route through a test.

The test needs to be carried out correctly.

MOT testing in Ponteland

Today, Meadowfield Auto Centre provides MOT testing in Ponteland, Northumberland, alongside servicing, repairs, tyres and vehicle diagnostics.

Our MOT capability forms part of a wider workshop operation designed to look after vehicles throughout their ownership rather than simply once a year at MOT time.

Where maintenance or repairs are required, having servicing, diagnostic and repair capability within the same independent garage can make the process considerably simpler for the customer.

But we maintain the distinction between the two:

an MOT tests. A service maintains.

Both matter.

Another milestone in Meadowfield's development

The LKQ Academy MOT Tester IMI Level 2 (Classes 4 & 7) course on 28 May 2024 is another useful point in Meadowfield's technical history.

It demonstrates that our investment in technician development isn't something that started recently.

Long before Meadowfield joined 1TEC Auto Hub, our technicians were already using LKQ Academy to develop the skills required inside a modern independent garage.

Since then, the subjects have become increasingly technical.

The principle hasn't changed.

Invest in the people. Develop the workshop. Keep raising standards.
