Husband and wife team Stephen and Ellie Browne attended the IAAF Garage Awards in Birmingham after Meadowfield Auto Centre Ltd was shortlisted as a finalist in the Best Single-Site Garage category.
Although it did not win, this was further recognition after Ellie was awarded the inaugural Woman in the Motor Industry – Inspiring Returner Award last year.
She successfully the physical and emotional challenges of recovering from a stroke at an age when few people would ever expect to face such a condition.
Stephen grew up in Ponteland and during his time at Ponteland High School, he completed two weeks of work experience at the local garage, which was then owned by Bill Doggett.
This early experience would later prove significant as it introduced Stephen to the very garage he would eventually go on to own after developing his skills and experience at various garages.
Ellie joined Meadowfield Auto Centre in June 2020, bringing her main dealer customer service experience, professionalism and a strong knowledge base to the business.
Stephen and Ellie fell in love and in November 2022, they welcomed their first child. Less than three weeks after the birth, Ellie suffered a rare form of stroke known as CVST.
Despite the challenges she faced, Ellie remained determined to play a role in both her family and the business. During her recovery, she gradually resumed responsibilities from home before eventually returning to Meadowfield Auto Centre full-time.
Her resilience, determination and commitment was recognised with the national award.
As for the development of the business, Stephen said: “We operate as an all-brand independent garage built around a ‘Fast-Fit Plus’ model, combining same-day turnaround with the ability to service and repair all makes and models.
“Perhaps most remarkably, our growth has been achieved without increasing workshop size, ramp capacity or parking availability.
“Between 2020 and 2026, we significantly increased labour sales, customer numbers, online bookings and MOT volumes while operating from the same site.
“Meadowfield Auto Centre has also supported local youth football teams and Rotary Club events, helping contribute to community activities beyond the workshop.”
In addition, Stephen has authored and self-published a local history book, ‘Ponteland and the Motor Car: A Pictorial History’. Of the original 500 copies printed, 494 have been sold.
